Mark Goldthorp’s Top 5 Audition Tips!

We caught up with our International VP, Mark Goldthorp, for #TipTuesday and got his top 5 tips for auditions:

1, Let the song reveal something about you

Let your personality come through. Don’t hide. When I’m watching a performance I want to feel things, either to laugh or cry. Free yourself. Find a song that has some relevance to you. It will make it easier to be truthful, honest and specific.

2, Don’t obsess about your voice

Obsess about what you’re trying to convey.

3, Fall in love with the song

There’s no point singing a song you don’t love just because it might show a top C!

4, Mark your breaths in

Think about the sentences. Great singers phrase brilliantly but you can’t phrase without the solid foundation of breath. Learn to Breathe!

5, You are unique

Don’t try to sound like someone else. I’m never going be Ben Platt but then he’s never going play Trekkie Monster! Be yourself. Test: Sing ‘Happy Birthday’ without ‘adding’ anything. That’s your voice! Embrace it. The rest is all colours and shading.

Mark Goldthorp is International Vice Principal & Head of Musical Theatre at AMTA

His other numerous West End and touring credits include playing in MATILDA (Doctor/Escapologist), AVENUE Q (Nicky/Trekkie), the 25th Anniversary Concert of LES MISERABLES at the 02, THE DROWSY CHAPERONE, INTO THE WOODS, LES MISERABLES, WOMAN IN WHITE, and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.
