New York theatre director Brian Feehan gives young actors a few pointers on what to focus on.
What would be your advice to new performers wanting to embark on a career as an actor?
– To learn as much as you possibly can. Read a play, learn a new song, practice your tap steps, keep working on your craft.
– Get as many tricks and tools in your arsenal as possible. The more versatile you are the more chances of getting a job.
– Watch other people. These days we have the benefit of YouTube where you can watch other people and learn from them. If you can’t afford to go to the shows you can usually watch them online somewhere. Do your research and learn from others.
– Take risks. No director wants an actor to come into the audition room (or the rehearsal room) who is tentative. We have an expression in New York ‘Go Big or Go Home’.
